Coach, consultant, counselor or mentor: which one do you need?
A consultant gives you answers. A mentor shares their experience. A counselor helps you work through what’s affecting your wellbeing. A coach helps you find and build your own way forward. All four are useful, for different problems.
I’ve trained as a counselor, worked as a consultant, and coached leaders for years, so I know how blurry these lines can get. Here’s how I separate them.
Consultant
Choose a consultant when you need expertise you don’t have, and when the problem is mostly in the business, such as a broken process or a new system. They analyze the situation and tell you what to do.
Mentor
Choose a mentor when you want to learn from someone who has already walked your path. It’s usually an informal relationship, and the advice comes from what worked for them.
Counselor or therapist
Choose a licensed counselor or therapist when anxiety, depression, trauma or a personal crisis is getting in the way of your life. This is clinical care. Coaching can’t replace it.
Coach
Choose a coach when you know the problem has something to do with how you lead. A coach asks questions, gives you honest feedback and holds you accountable while you practice doing things differently.
Three questions to help you choose
- Where is the problem? If it’s in a process, consider a consultant. If it’s in how you lead, consider a coach. If it’s in your health or wellbeing, see a counselor.
- Do you want answers or growth? Consultants solve the problem for you. Coaches build your ability to solve it next time.
- Who has done this before? If you just want to hear how someone else handled it, a mentor may be all you need.
You may need more than one. And a good professional in any of these roles should tell you when you’ve come to the wrong person. If you’re not sure, book a free coffee chat and we can work it out together.
Tell me what’s going on. We’ll start there.
A coffee chat is a free, 30-minute, no-pressure conversation online about what you’re dealing with and whether coaching is the right next step.
